Biography

Blossom Luxe was established in 2005 by self-taught designer and jewellery artist Emily Barnes.

I have a strong belief that gemstone and precious metal jewellery should not languish in a jewellery box or a glass cabinet but rather be worn and enjoyed every day.

I have been a ‘maker’ since birth; drawing, cooking, sewing and crafting which led to enrolling in a Bachelors Degree in Industrial (Product) Design. Four years of design school killed my creativity; on finishing I did an about-face and accepted a job in a bank which led to my current career in marketing for an investment manager. I also currently studying a Business/Commerce degree part time by correspondence.

I had dabbled with beading while in uni and sold a few items to a clothing boutique but my interest waned as the pressure of study took over. In 2005, I found myself without a pair of earrings to wear to a special occasion and remembered my bead box; the rest, as they say, is history.

My hobby evolved into a business as more and more friends and strangers started to request commissions and ask “where did you get those earrings?”. My creativity was reawakened in the search for materials, designing new pieces and the rush that is selling something crafted from my own two hands.

My designs are predominantly wire worked. I don't think I've quite found my own unique style yet, but I'm getting there. I tend to make pieces that are contrasting in styles: either delicate and ladylike or funky and urban.

Hopefully this blog will be a good record of my attempts to make this fulfilling hobby into some sort of business; as well being as a record of the pieces I make and their meanings to me and those bits and pieces on the web and in blogland that inspire me.

Interests

I Like: making things with my hands, getting parcels in the mail, good coffee, semillon/sauvignon blanc, sleeping in, reading trashy novels and biographies, pristine glossy magazines, finding new blogs, walking to work, listening to music (though I never buy CDs), finding new bars in the alleyways of Melbourne, getting dressed up, playing with beads, travelling with my boyfriend, being messy (I call it organised chaos), impractical shoes, bright sunlight although it makes me sneeze, warm weather, being a homebody, rugging up, eating things that are bad for me.

I Dislike: being cold, team sports, dishonesty (although I've been known to tell the odd lie, albeit badly), the pressure of exams, shellfish, bad pedestrians, red wine mouth, being corrected, people that keep me waiting, snickers bars, camping (although I'm told I enjoy it when I'm there).
